Bronze statuette of Hermes. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 164. Hermes—messenger of the gods, the cattle rustler, the inventor of the lyre, the guider of souls across the River Styx, the manly god of boundaries—stands gracefully here rather than moving purposefully.Pottery: red-figured cup. INTERIOR: Hermes. Hermes flies to the right in a running pose, his head turned back to the left and down. He holds a lyre (red plektron attached with red cord) in his left hand and a kerykeion up over his shoulders in his right.

This head of Hermes is an archaizing work: the rows of corkscrew curls above the forehead go back to the Archaic period (600–480 BCE), while the facial features are in the Classical style of the later fifth century BCE. Hermes, the Roman Mercury, was the messenger god. He was associated with boundaries and led the souls to the underworld.

Description. Pottery: black-figured volute-krater. White accessories faded. No marked distinction in shape between neck, shoulder, and body, with voluted handles; designs on the neck, with maeander and lotus and honeysuckle pattern above, except under the handles; below, two friezes.Bronze statuette of Hermes seated on a rock. Hermes was known to the Romans as Mercury. While his principal character is that of the divine herald, for which he is often represented with the kerykeion (herald's staff), here he holds a purse in his hand, indicating his role as the god of commerce.
